For a while now, Carlos Barrera has been sending us here at R-G emails about his geared turbine engine design. He’s had it patented (in Mexico) since 1991 and somehow doesn’t seem to have found someone to buy the idea and use it. Personally, I think that there are good reasons for that unwillingness to mass-produce them. To me it looks like there are too many gears and vanes, and it’s going to fail pretty early even if it can be made. Somewhat like Rapael Morgado’s MYT engine in that way – it’s clever and may work, but not for long even if you do manage the engineering accurately enough. When making a heat engine, you have to allow for the thermal expansion of the different parts at varying temperatures, so the design has to get the tolerances right over the expected temperature differences. Not easy, and sometimes just plain impossible when the temperature differentials are large so a rethink/redesign is needed to make it manufacturable. For those who don’t have the experience, it’s hard even holding a 10-thou tolerance on turning something of a foot or so since as you progress the work heats and expands, so you need to keep the temperature of the workpiece constant and specified. If that ring also has gear teeth that need to mesh tightly enough to avoid too much backlash, you’re in trouble, and you have to fix that by designing extra mechanisms to adjust the backlash as the gears heat up. Not quite as simple as it looks.
That’s a picture of the internals of the system from the latest email Carlos sent. The exploded view is somewhat busy for the size of the picture, and the text becomes illegible, but this picture copes with the need for at least one illustration on an article….
Carlos of course disagrees with my assessment, so I thought I’d put it up here for other people to weigh in with their ideas on what’s good and what’s not. For the next bit from Carlos, bear in mid that English is not his first language. Whether this is Googlish or just plain difficult I can’t really tell.

Incidentally the YouTube video has awful music and is narrated in (I think) Spanish, which I don’t speak. The captions are however English and you can pick up the basic ideas of how it works. I have no information about whether one of these has ever been made and tested, but I suspect there has never been a working example.
