Bob Rohner, one of the original developers of the Papp Engine has been working on replicating the Papp engine. March 24th, Bob posted a video on his youtube channel updating us on his current progress. All information previously has shown that bob had successfully replicated single cylinders that pushed a single piston. This new update he shows a working 2 cylinder engine using nothing but electrical input. The cylinders are charged with 1 atmosphere of a mixture of noble gases. The exact mixture he’s using is unknown, but the Papp mixture is public information. Bob Rohner, unlike his brother John, has continually demonstrated progress. He publicly demonstrates his progress and doesn’t ask for a single penny in the process.
My hope in the reality of plasma powered engines has been renewed with the release of Bob’s latest video. I cannot express enough how important this would be if he were successful. The engine runs on relatively low electrical input. Key component to the puzzle is the gas mixture and the high voltage (20kv) used to fire the electrodes. This video shows the first running engine since the 1980’s. While having a slight timing problem, it’s the best evidence ever shown that the Papp engine was real and not a hoax. Thank you Bob for being open and sharing this evidence!
A little background on how the plasma engine works. A sealed piston cylinder is vacuumed first, then filled with a mixture of inert gases. For those who don’t know their periodic table, Noble gases include helium (He),neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), and the radioactive radon (Rn) and are all odorless, colorless, monatomic gases with very low chemical reactivity. The gases are classified as inert, which means they do not burn or otherwise react chemically with any other element. The biggest hurdle in using noble gases in an engine like bob’s is containing them within the cylinder chambers. Helium, one of the gases used, has a tendency to slip out of the smallest crack and float away into space. Once bob gets the concept down it would benefit him to create a sealed crank shaft that shares the vacuum of each opposing cylinder. After the cylinders are charged, a high voltage arc in the cylinder base pre-ionizes the gas mixture and is followed by a high voltage pulse. The result is a ball of plasma near the source of ignition(electrodes). What happens next is the mystery. Some speculate that plasma state of matter has different physical properties than the neutral state. In Key Ring Atom theory, electrons in an atom that is in the plasma state no longer spin in their normal orbit but spin off and create light. This spin off effect gives the orbiting electron cloud a C shape. When in a plasma state, matter is excited and spins at a higher rate. When these spinning molecules collide with another energized or neutral state atom, they react violently and are propelled away from each other at a high rate of speed. This effect in a gas cloud will chain react and spread like the ripples in a pond. The reaction creates an outward expansion from the initial reaction point resulting in a high pressure if it’s sealed. This effect is what drives the piston in the Plasma Motor. There are other theories that involve magnetic fields forming a toroid (smoke ring effect) that accelerates the gas from the ignition point and slams it into the piston at the other end of the chamber. Kind of like a plasma rail gun if that makes sense. I’m leaning more towards the Key Ring Theory myself. If any physicists have ideas, whether critical or supporting; feel free to comment:P
